Finalists for the "what would you do with 99%" contest

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Thanks again for everyone who entered!  I had a lot of trouble getting it down to 10 entries, so find here the top 12 entries (in no particular order!)  We’ll finish voting next Monday, May 4th at midnight and the winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 5th!  Good luck contestants!

Rebecca Page wants to pay for the insurance to set up her own childminding business and with the remaining go to Cornwall to visit her husband’s mother, who has ailing health.

Nicola Poor wants to invest the money so she has a solid base to achieve her dream of becoming self sustaining by starting up her own business.

Chris Dunn as a new arrival in the UK, wants to deck out his deck, so he can stop being ashamed of having his friends over for barbecues.

Sue Smith has a “Mini dream” to buy a classic Mini Cooper and spend her spare time doing any required work to bring it up to its former glory.  I’m guessing the £500 would buy the roof, or the seats or something?

Julie Kapral is a lovely young lady with an obsession with pink, whowants to become a full fledged designer, and needs to buy desks and cabinets.  She promised to send lots of photos of her new office!

Basheera Khan would use the cash to buy a plane ticket to visit her family in South Africa and hang out with her mother.  She even offers her mother as a surrogate.

Joy McCarthy would have a small man (or a big one, she says she’s not too picky) come dig a hole to install a “Green Cone” so she can reduce her household waste to practically nothing (and also produce fantastic soil for her garden).

Stacey O’Neill would, during her last year next to the ocean, would practice her knot tying, and finally learn how to sail!

Meg Smitley would get twelve square meters of rubber-love… also known as gym-matting for her basement.  An avid wrestler, she wants to finally get a chance to show her husband how a take-down should happen!

Helen Cruse decided she would use it to have a proper roughing it vacation on the Tiny Isle of Shuna off Oban. No Electricity. No TV. Mental!

Melinda Seckington would get the ultimate geeky boardgame collection, getting as many of the top 25 games out there as she could!

Jim Lamb wants us to send him a fresh English pie to him in Australia.

Vote for your favourite now!

Anyone who wants a dirty geat hole in their garden for waste gets my vote, how unselfish as I can't think of anything worse in my Garden. Mind you the way it looks at the moment no one would notice!

Definitely Joy McCarthy! What better use of a 'little man' (or big one...) than to dig a hole for waste! Funny, creative and inspiring blog!

I love the mini idea, by sue smith. This girl is lovelly, and has lost thousands on a mini that she paid someone to repair, only to completely ruin it, she was on the ferret tv programme a few years back, and never got her money back.

I actually had a hard time choosing between the young girl with a dream of becoming a professional designer, and the lady who wants the hole in her yard. After pondering for many a minutes, and going over each individuals capabilities, and so on, I chose Julie Kapral. What a tough one. ~ grins

Am casting my vote for Julie Kapral; my 5 year old daughter's nicknames are alternately "Pinkalicious" and "Pinkie Pie"; she has always loved the color pink, and shows no signs of letting her passion for pink wane - would be happy to see Ms. Kapral get the desks and cabinets she needs to further her design dreams.....also looking forward to seeing (and sharing with my daughter) the pictures Julie has promised of her revamped studio space!!

I just want to point out that a number of Julie's "designs" were stolen from other artists.

It's a strange coincidence that suddenly her website and blog no longer work, and her "designs" on logopond are no longer there...

Yeah hopefully it's not too late to cancel the cheque. It should go to an honest contestant.

  57. On May 18th, 2009 Greg S wrote

Julie Kapral has angered a lot of designers off by plagiarizing their work. Not just copying it but literally lifting the art and claiming it as her own. Use of her design services makes her and her all her clients vulnerable to a copyright infringement lawsuit.

  58. On May 18th, 2009 kat neville wrote

Hi Rico, Roy, M and Greg,

I am the one who ran the competition. Thanks for the heads-up; I had not heard of this, and will email her and see if I can get some more information about it. As a designer myself, I completely understand how important it is to look into plagarism (and would be very hurt if someone stole my work). I am disappointed to hear about it; the evidence looks bad, too. I am going to wait to hear see if she responds. After the last round of plagarism problems with a guy who was getting support because he claimed others had plagarised him, when it turned out it was him who was plagarising, has made me a little bit more cautious about making judgements quickly.

The money has already been sent, and as the competition had nothing to do with designing anything, I guess its only relationship to her design work is that she was going to use the money to make a design office. If it turns out that she admits fault and wants to return the money, I would definitely respect her being honorable, but I am more interested in how she will be handling worried clients and illustrators and artists that are accusing her.

This is a real shame, as above all, you want the winner to be someone with integrity ... someone who is worthy. I'm sure the other contestants who got into the swing of things are feeling a little brassed off about this. Afterall, there were some super ideas and excellent blogs.

It's a shame the ideas were not considered more, as well as the actual blogs themselves. It was just down to a popularity contest, a 16 year old High School student would easily be able to recruit lots to vote for her...

  60. On May 21st, 2009 Joy McCarthy wrote

As one of the 12 finalists, I think it’s a real shame such an inspired idea has caused so much of a rumpus. I can’t comment on Julie’s work because I don’t know anything about it, but ultimately the contest was about what you would do with the money, not about the entrants’ professionalism and / or ethics.

I’d just like to say to Kat and bview … a big thanks for coming up with such a brilliant concept. It was great fun and, as a small business owner, I got a lot of interest and mileage out of it. So please Kat … don’t let all this hoo-ha put you off coming up with more great ideas!

I was actually had Julie working on a project of mine when I found out that she had stolen others artwork. Immediately, I confronted her about it and she told me she had made some wrong choices in the past.

Then, in the middle of my project, she vanished. Her email no longer works. She stole hundreds of dollars from me, personally.
