I was actually had Julie working on a project of mine when I found out that she had stolen others artwork. Immediately, I confronted her about it and she told me she had made some wrong choices in the past.

Then, in the middle of my project, she vanished. Her email no longer works. She stole hundreds of dollars from me, personally.

As one of the 12 finalists, I think it’s a real shame such an inspired idea has caused so much of a rumpus. I can’t comment on Julie’s work because I don’t know anything about it, but ultimately the contest was about what you would do with the money, not about the entrants’ professionalism and / or ethics.

I’d just like to say to Kat and bview … a big thanks for coming up with such a brilliant concept. It was great fun and, as a small business owner, I got a lot of interest and mileage out of it. So please Kat … don’t let all this hoo-ha put you off coming up with more great ideas!

This is a real shame, as above all, you want the winner to be someone with integrity ... someone who is worthy. I'm sure the other contestants who got into the swing of things are feeling a little brassed off about this. Afterall, there were some super ideas and excellent blogs.

It's a shame the ideas were not considered more, as well as the actual blogs themselves. It was just down to a popularity contest, a 16 year old High School student would easily be able to recruit lots to vote for her...

Hi Rico, Roy, M and Greg,

I am the one who ran the competition. Thanks for the heads-up; I had not heard of this, and will email her and see if I can get some more information about it. As a designer myself, I completely understand how important it is to look into plagarism (and would be very hurt if someone stole my work). I am disappointed to hear about it; the evidence looks bad, too. I am going to wait to hear see if she responds. After the last round of plagarism problems with a guy who was getting support because he claimed others had plagarised him, when it turned out it was him who was plagarising, has made me a little bit more cautious about making judgements quickly.

The money has already been sent, and as the competition had nothing to do with designing anything, I guess its only relationship to her design work is that she was going to use the money to make a design office. If it turns out that she admits fault and wants to return the money, I would definitely respect her being honorable, but I am more interested in how she will be handling worried clients and illustrators and artists that are accusing her.

Julie Kapral has angered a lot of designers off by plagiarizing their work. Not just copying it but literally lifting the art and claiming it as her own. Use of her design services makes her and her all her clients vulnerable to a copyright infringement lawsuit.

Yeah hopefully it's not too late to cancel the cheque. It should go to an honest contestant.

I just want to point out that a number of Julie's "designs" were stolen from other artists.

It's a strange coincidence that suddenly her website and blog no longer work, and her "designs" on logopond are no longer there...
