Vi’s Top Voucher Picks for August

Friday, August 28th, 2009

I thought it was about time I had another look through the vouchers that are on offer via BView, and let you know which ones are my favourites.  There are some good ones on there at the moment too, vouchers that can save you a pretty penny if you use them right!

My first pick is a freebie (well I do like a good freebie!).  Lots of youngsters are generally thinking about learning to drive at this time of year, and it’s an expensive thing to do.  Well up and down the country there are a few driving schools listed on BView at the moment who are offering free lessons.
Lakeside School of Motoring in Dorchester, Starfish Driving in Weston-Super-Mare, Devans Driver Training in Plymouth, and Walkers Driving School in North Lanarkshire are all offering the first lesson free.  SLK Driving school in Blackpool is offering a free lesson when you refer a friend – the more friends you refer, the more lessons you get for free. All good stuff!

My second voucher pick is for Zizzi Italian restaurant who are offering a choice of two deals at the moment.  The first is two main meals for £10, and the second is buy one main meal, get the second for just £1.  Both are excellent deals as Zizzi do some really nice food.

For my third pick, I’ve stuck with the food theme again, and it’s another fab deal this time from Pizza Express who are offering Free pizza when you buy any other pizza at full menu price.  It is only available on collection, and there are a couple of exclusions, but it’s still a great way of having a really nice meal on the cheap.

How many of you can’t wait for the kids to go back to school?  Well here’s one for any of you who need to buy back to school items and just can’t face taking the little dears into town!  M&S are offering Free delivery on school wear with the code SCHOOL09 as well as having lots of 3 for 2 offers on school wear items.

Finally, my last pick for this month, is one that is close to my own heart being a green issue.  Clean and Green Ltd. Are offering 20% off all orders placed and free delivery by using the link on the BView site.  Now that is a good way to try a green cleaning product if you’ve not already done so before!

Good luck, and feel free to let me know what your favourite vouchers are too.

Tesco Points Vouchers – How to use them to your best advantage

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Tesco is probably one of the best supermarkets for collecting points from at the moment, offering 1 point for every £1 spent in the store or petrol station as well as in their online stores, and with extra points offered if you shop using their credit card as well.  One point is equal to a penny if you spend it on regular food goods so that’s not too bad.  However, there are ways that you can make each of those points worth either 2p or 4p depending on how you use them.

First of all there are Tesco deals vouchers.  These have been around for a while now and so many people have already come across them.  Tesco allow you to exchange each £2.50 worth of Tesco points voucher for £10 of deals voucher, making each point you earned worth 4p.  You have to choose which deals voucher you want when you order them, but there’s quite a variety of choice from vouchers for days out at places such as Legoland or the zoo, to vouchers which can be spent at restaurants such as Bella Italia, Café Rouge or Harry Ramsdens.  They can also be turned into vouchers  for jewellery at Goldsmiths, or Air miles as well as a variety of other places.

Alternatively, the new way of using your points vouchers is to use them in store on specific departments where you can now exchange them for ‘in store deals vouchers’ worth 2x the amount of your original points voucher so £5 becomes £10 and each point is worth 2p.  The departments that you can do this for are, Toys, Clothing, Baby & Toddler, Cosmetics & Skincare, Tesco Mobile, and Wines.  To do this, all you have to do is to either use the tesco online system to exchange them using the codes on your vouchers which you can do here or you can exchange them by post by printing out this order form and sending it off to them as it tells you to.  Done online the vouchers normally arrive in about a week, and done by post a little longer.  Then you just use them in store to buy items from the relevant department just as you normally would, and hand over the voucher at the checkout.  The only difference being that you get twice as much for your money.

Vi’s top vouchers for June

Friday, June 12th, 2009

I didn’t offer you any top tips for coupons last month, but thought I’d do so again this month and let you know some of my favourite ones I’ve seen here on BView.

Currys
For anyone who’s thinking of making an electrical purchase there are some great Curry’s discounts available at the moment.  Which one you use is rather dependent on how much you’re spending, as they have vouchers for money off from £10 off £300 spend to £100 off when you spend £1000, and several others in between.  Really useful if you have a major purchase to make as Currys are often pretty good on price to begin with.

Boots
With the sun showing her face for the first time in earnest recently, we’re all exposing a bit more skin.  Boots are offering 3 for 2 on selected skincare products at the moment so you can get yourself in tip top condition before you head out into the sunshine.  Don’t forget the suntan lotion though, we don’t want you spoiling your skin by turning it lobster red!

Pizza Express
If you’ve got an orange mobile phone, then you can get 2 for 1 on pizzas on Wednesdays with their special voucher codes.  Simply print the voucher and pop your Orange Wednesday code into the box to validate it and you are away.  As well as the pizza deal, you will also get two free servings of either Garlic Bread or Dough Balls it’s a brill bargain!

Chiquito
Now here’s a simple one for you.  Sign up to receive their free newsletter (by e-mail), and they’ll give you a voucher to get some free nachos next time you visit them between Monday-Thursday.

The London Dungeon
With the summer upon us we all start thinking of holidays and days out with the family.  Take a trip to the London Dungeon and you can get 2 for 1 entry with this printable voucher.  If you’ve never been there, it’s quite an impressive place to visit.

There are a number of other places which you could look at visiting which are offering 2 for 1 or other discounts at the moment including the London Bridge Experience and the Imperial War museum.  Don’t forget to look for discount vouchers this summer before you go anywhere, after all if there’s an offer available you might as well take advantage of it.

Buying reduced food at the supermarket

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Shopping for food is an expensive task, and a fairly thankless one because you have to do it over again every week.  It’s especially tedious when money is tight.

There is however one way you can sometimes cut your costs substantially, but it does mean being prepared to spend some extra time and effort on things.

Every fresh food item in the UK has to have a sell by date on it.  This is the date after which the supermarkets aren’t allowed to sell it.  (This only applies to fresh foods, items in tins and which have best before dates work rather differently).  Every day the supermarkets will have a staff member who will go round and find all the fresh food items which are going to go out of date that day, and reduce the price on them.  This is to help stop wastage.  If they have to throw the item away they get nothing for it.  If they can sell it – even at a reduced price – then they will get something.

You can take advantage of this knowledge by watching in the various supermarkets near you to find out when they make their reductions.  Most supermarkets will have two times.  The first time is normally when they reduce the items down by a percentage – this varies from place to place, some will be halved, some will only reduce by 10%.  This first reduction is normally done fairly early in the day.  The second reduction is normally done late in the afternoon or early in the evening, and at this time they will reduce the already reduced items down some more, generally to a really low price, and if you’re around when this happens, you can take advantage and buy a lot of food very cheaply.  So take the time to get to know when your local supermarkets make their reductions.

Things like bread, milk, cold meat, and much more can be frozen – if you freeze it on the day of purchase, and it’s use by date is tomorrow, then when you defrost it you will have 24 hours to use it up exactly the same as you would if you just used it when you bought it from the supermarket.  The same thing applies to most products that can be frozen, check to see  how long they have between the sell by and the use by date… if it’s the same date, then if you freeze it, when you defrost it you will need to eat it the same day.  If it’s three days difference then you will have three days when you defrost it and so on.

You do need to be careful when doing this is to make sure you can use the item before it goes out of date, OR that it’s suitable for freezing and you have the space to store it.  If you buy ten loaves of bread because they’re 10p each but only have space to freeze four of them, you’ll find yourself wasting the rest.

Saving Money on doing up your home

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

…discounts, coupons & grants you can get to help you.

Decorating is an expensive business, and it can be even more expensive if you’re trying to make improvements to the house that are environmentally friendly.  Don’t panic though, there are way’s you can cut the costs of all that DIY.

Government Grants

Did you know that the government wants people to put in things like cavity wall insulation, efficient water heating, and loft insulation?  They do.  So much so that they actually offer grants that are available to everyone to help them with the costs of installing some of these things.  There are two schemes available, one is for people who are in receipt of certain benefits, and it gives a full grant to do certain things – this means that if you qualify, you could have your cavity walls filled, your loft insulated, and even a new sleeve fitted on your boiler completely free of charge!  The other grant which is available is for the same sorts of items, but is available to anyone regardless of if they are on benefits or not, and could give you a discount of between 50% and 70%.  You can find out about both here.

Coupons

BView has a section called ‘home and garden’ which is always worth keeping an eye on, there are coupons here for places like B&Q, Warrington Fire Surrounds, and ABC Carpets and Beds, as well as loads more places that do everything from lighting to flooring and kitchens.  There’s another section on B-View which lists discounts offered by trades people too, so if you need a specialist it’s worth giving it a look, they’re not always national chains either, as BView encourages local trades people and stores to offer discounts through their site too.

Discounts

Lots of DIY shops want you to use their stores at the moment, so they’re all competing for your custom.  What this means is that you will find most of them are running special weekend events where they offer discounts on one or more areas within the store, so plan your DIY with plenty of time, and you’ll be able to take advantage of these.  Make sure you ask in the stores (the customer service desk is best) as well to see if there are any other discounts you can take advantage of.  Some stores offer a percentage off to pensioners on a certain day of the week, and others offer a discount to people who’ve just moved home in the last few months.

BOGOFs and Bargains

Thursday, April 9th, 2009

Ever heard the term bogof and wondered what it meant?  Well it’s a term meaning Buy One, Get One Free.  It’s a concept that has spread across the shops in recent years to try and tempt us to buy one brand over another, and seduce us away from our normal brand.

Is it a good idea?  Well… this is something that varies quite a lot.  If it’s an item that you were going to buy anyway, and you can store the extra one then it’s most definitely worth going for.  After all you’re getting something for nothing.  If it’s not something you normally buy then you have to stop and ask yourself a few questions – Do I really need this?  Am I buying it to replace something else and if so does it work out cheaper this way? Can I store the spare one for long enough to stop it going off?  If you don’t need the item and are just being seduced by the label telling you that you’re getting something extra for free, then you’re not going to save money and it’s not a bargain.  If you are buying it to replace something else – exchanging one type of beef burger for another for example – then does it work out cheaper this way?

Look at the weight on each box as well as the price and number of items in the box like this:

Brand A Burgers – 8 in a box and the total weight is 800g.  The price is £1.00
Brand B Burgers – 8 in a box and the total weight is 600g.  The price is £1.50

Brand B are on bogof, Brand A are not.

Which is really cheaper?

What you are actually paying for brand B is £1.50 for 1200g of burgers which is equal to 12.5p per 100g (the calculation is 1.50 ÷ 12).  Brand A which isn’t on bogof works out to 12.5p per 100g as well (the calculation is 1.00 ÷ 8), so really you are not getting anything extra for your money by buying the bogof item!

As you can see from this, it’s important to do the calculations to check because sometimes it’s actually a false economy to buy the item that’s on bogof.

Something else you can do if you don’t think you will use all the extra before the item goes off, or you don’t really have the space to store it, is to shop with a friend.  By doing this, you end up each just with one item, but you pay half price for it.

How Coupons Can Save You Money

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Vouchers & coupons may not seem like the sort of thing that can make a huge difference in your life, but actually if you use them right they can make more difference than you might imagine.

Most people reading this will do shopping every week, and will have to buy things like clothes, replace things for the house etc. and of course all these things cost.  Imagine if you will that over the course of a month you’ve got to buy all your food shopping, a new washing machine because yours has broken & a new school dress & shoes for your child.  Without shopping around and using coupons this will cost you a fair amount of money.  However, if you look carefully at where you buy each item, and check out what coupons are available for use on the products you need, then you could find you could save yourself quite a sum.

Shoes bought in one shop might cost you £25 but in another they’re £30.  At first glance the obvious place to buy them is the first shop because they’re £5 cheaper there.  However, imagine that you’ve got a 20% off coupon for use in the second shop and things change slightly.  Instead of paying £30, you’d pay £30-20% which is £24 making the second shop actually work out cheaper.  Saving = £1 even though you bought the more expensive item!

The school dress for your daughter might be £15 in the shop you normally buy them from, but it’s worth looking in places you wouldn’t normally think of as clothes shopssupermarkets for example often have kids clothes at remarkably reasonable prices especially school clothes.  Always join any clubs that supermarkets offer unless you really object to them as they often send out coupons that you can use in their store too.  Imagine that by doing this you have brought the cost of that school dress down to a little under £10. Oh and of course you were going there anyway to do your shopping so you’ve just saved yourself a bit of petrol too! Saving = £6.

The washing machine you’ve found that you like can be bought in Dixons, and even if it’s not the best price you can find, they price match most of the big stores.  So rather than buying it in store, go online and buy it from their website – the delivery will be free, and you can use the £10 off code that BView has available in the voucher section. Saving = £10 and a trip to the store!

Obviously you won’t always find a voucher to help, and when you do sometimes the savings will be big, and sometimes small, but even if you only averaged saving £16 a month that would still be an extra £192 you’d have towards other things over the course of a year.

Are you the most worthy of 99% off?

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Savings, savings, savings. Everyone’s tightening their belt; buying no-name; downloading coupons, and hunting for bargains.  BView wants to be a part of that: we’ve got savings from the big boys and the little guys (or girls). We might even have savings for your neighbourhood… check out your local area here. But enough of that, you’re probably here because you want the daddy of vouchers. I’m offering you 99% off ANYTHING in the world (up to £500). That’s right, anything. But you don’t get this big lovin’ for free, you gots to do a bit o’ work for it!

win

*The work:

  1. You write a blog post telling the world what you’d do with your 99% off.  Make sure you have a link back to www.bview.co.uk.
  2. Send an email to competition@bview.com and give us a link to said posting.
  3. All entries have to be received by midnight GMT on Saturday, April 25, 2009.
  4. I’m going to shortlist my top 10 favourites, and then the lovely attendees of Social Media Camp London will vote on the winner, which will be announced by 8pm Sunday, April 26, 2009 GMT.
  5. You can enter as many times as you like (if you have multiple blogs, then go for it!).
  6. People from anywhere in the world can enter, but the prize will be awarded in pounds sterling.

So that’s it.  Now it’s time for you to get your creative hats on (I know I’ve been singing, “If I had a million dollars” in my head while writing this)! To get you started, us folk at the BView office have come up with what we’d do with the savings. You’re lucky our boss won’t let us enter, but hopefully they will inspire you to think of some great ideas.  Good luck, and I look forward to reading your entries!

Dan (the developer)

If I had 99% off anything, I imagine I would take a trip down to the picturesque village of Bray. With no wallet to burden me and a crisp £5 note in my freshly ironed shirt pocket, I would walk purposefully into The Fat Duck with my girlfriend and ask for the finest table (Norovirus be damned). After enjoying one of the finest meals in the world, I would personally hand Mr Blumenthal the £5 note and ask him to bill the rest to BView.

Huw (the developer)

I would like to invest £375 in the UK stock market; strategically selecting shares in struggling companies within the financial sector (such banking and insurance based companies).  Following this, I would spend £100 on premium bonds, and squander the remaining £25 on a new jumper (NOTE: I may purchase 2 jumpers, depending on the price per-jumper).

jumper

Colin (the product guy)

I’d take my wife away for a week in cornwall. Just a bit of a break from the norm, just a little something to break the monotony of all that child care that has gotten to be a little bit out of control. It would be cool to to be in France but what about a beach that soothes, that reignites romance? A bargain for a fiver.

Cornwall

Simon (the community guy)

With 99% off I’d have to go for a Canon EOS 40D to replace my beaten up and practically ancient 350D. It would be a shame having to replace it if i won (I’ve had it for so long) but something tells me I’d get over it….
canon

Kat (the web designer)

I have a problem: I love goats, especially baby ones, and so I’ve made up a character named safetygoat, who, sporting a fetching red lifejacket, has become my little mascot.  I had this idea that I could make plastic replicas of them, but minimum quantities means it’s expensive (and I’d end up with hundreds, maybe even thousands of the little guys).  So, I’ve been making them on my own by making a silicon mould and pouring polyeurathane and then painting the result.  You can see the adventures of safetygoat here.

safetygoat with a lump of sulfur

They’re pretty cute, but they’re not exactly the most refined looking toy. So, with my £495 (with a fiver of my own cash) I’d like to make proper vinyl safetygoats.   I’d get them properly made in some third world country, and I would get loads of them, so anyone who wanted their very own safetygoat could have one! It would be a dream come true!

We can’t win (unfortunately), so now it’s your turn!

So get out there and write your entries :)
